You will also have to tell the story of conscious life, which is associated with each body." But, of course, that won't tell the whole story. "If you want to tell the whole story of the world, you must say what objects there are in the world, what substances there are, and what properties they have at different times," Swinburne said on "Closer to Truth." This paper assesses Hayden White's Metahistory through the test of reflexivity that is, it asks whether the book's "general theory of the structure of that mode of thought which is called 'historical'" applies, as it should, to its own history of nineteenth-century "historical consciousness." Most components of the theoretical apparatus-the various concepts invoked in the "theory of the historical work" and in the "theory of tropes"-fail the reflexivity test further, it emerges that those same components are also seriously flawed on other grounds. Some of those promises took bad turns but weren't broken, like how I said I'd never hate you even though you gave me enough reasons to, or how you never stopped being my friend even when your boyfriend asked you to. We made promises to each other on the day I broke up with you so you could do your thing out there in Santa Monica without me holding you back. And if bringing up the past annoys you nowas I know it did when you left New York for Californiaknow that I'm sorry, but please don't be mad at me for reliving all of it. I just want you to remember things the way I do. You knew enough meaningless trivia to fill notebooks, but you occasionally slipped on the bigger things, like my birthday this year (May 17th, not the 18th), and you never kept your night classes straight even though I got you a cool planner with zombies on the cover (which you-know-who probably forced you to throw out). I doubt it'll even surprise you since we always joked about how your brain worked in funny ways. Trust me when I say I'm not talking down to you as I recall this memory, and many others, in great detail. I'll break down the details of this promise again. It hurts even more because this isn't the first promise you've broken. And you should know I'm really pissed because you swore you would never die and yet here we are. You're still alive in alternate universes, Theo, but I live in the real world, where this morning you're having an open-casket funeral. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Existence by David BrinIt comes as little surprise given its very size to see the author started work on elements of it well over twenty years ago, and I'll state my claim now that if he has anything more to say about the nature of mankind and humanity that he has included here, then he truly is at the forefront of his genre. Make no bones about it, this is a hefty chunk of sci-fi. Where are the aliens that had previously been so silent while we sought for them with our Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence? What is the purpose and message behind this capsule? And who can be sure that this alleged First Contact was actually the first? Those with enough funds are completely wired into a virtual world, but wherever they live out their existence things are going to be changed, when a space-based labourer, clearing space junk from orbit, finds an alien artifact containing contact with various races in a sort of memory bank cum virtual reality. The world is buckling under climate change, and over-population. We are a few decades further into the 21st Century at the start of this sci-fi novel. Summary: A mammoth undertaking - for writer and reader - as the definitions of mankind get surveyed by this dense, literary but ultimately most worthwhile sci-fi. Drought means that "the cruel dazzling brilliance of the metal sky" oppresses her capacity to realise her inner brilliance. "My ambition was as boundless as the mighty bush in which I have always lived," writes Sybylla who becomes painfully stuck in the gap between aspiration and achievement. Lingering in the mind are Franklin's lush evocations of the Australian landscape, alternately loved and loathed. "I am afflicted with the power of thought, which is a heavy curse," writes Sybylla, whose intellectual and artistic talents are stifled in "stagnant" Possum Gully where she must toil beneath the burning sun, suppressing her "hot wild spirit". This impassioned debut novel by Miles Franklin – who bequeathed funds to establish the country's most prestigious writing prize, the Miles Franklin literary award – was written when its author was only 16 and glistens with precocious wisdom. "Why do I write? Why does anyone write?" asks the teenage Sybylla, who dreams of pursuing a brilliant career as a writer, but, as she pens a book on "purloined paper", faces heartrending obstacles in 1890s rural Australia, from her family's poverty to societal misogyny. This timely book answers many questions Christians have about Islam, including these: Is Allah of the Qur’an the same as the God of the Bible? How does the life of Muhammad compare with that of Jesus Christ? Do all Muslims believe in jihad, the practice of spreading Islam by military force? How does the Qur’an differ from the Bible? What do Muslims believe about Jesus Christ? What is the Islamic attitude toward women? How do Muslims perceive Christians? How do Muslims hope to get to heaven? What sects exist within Islam? How can Christians witness effectively to Muslims? This book provides an insider’s look at a dominant world religion that few Christians understand. Raised as Sunni Muslims, the Caner brothers, who are now Christians and theology professors, present a remarkably candid and thorough view of Islam’s practices and beliefs.
